Brighton Demerest-Smith

Mr. Smith has been a Great Hearts teacher for ten years.

He has taught nearly every grade level from Kindergarten to High School Seniors and specializes in upper-level drawing and painting courses. Mr. Smith brings with him a rigorous Classical and technical studio training which has allowed him to reimagine Studio Art curricula. Because of this work, some of the most competitive art schools in the nation are actively seeking Great Hearts students.

Apart from teaching, Mr. Smith has maintained a successful career as a gallery artist. He has had 7 solo gallery exhibitions of his painting in Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Wisconsin. His work has been featured in group exhibitions and collections in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Wisconsin, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Berlin, and London.

He is a stabled artist with Skidmore Contemporary Art in Santa Monica, CA.

SESSIONS:

Essentials of Drawing: Studying the Masters

In this session Mr. Smith will give an introduction to how to approach analytical observational drawing, as well as traditional materials and approaches of drawing. Mr. Smith will spend time discussing philosophical and practical approaches of how and why working from the Masters is vital to the development of a child and ourselves as artists and educators. We will look at and work from artists such as John Singer Sargent, Diego Velazquez, Raphael, Vigee-Lebrun, and many more.
